Speedball is a storied American manufacturer of fine art materials, with a heritage dating back to 1899. Originally founded in Camden, New Jersey, as the C. Howard Hunt Pen Company, it initially specialized in high-volume dip pen production. The brand gained its famous name following a 1915 partnership with sign letterer Ross F. George, who developed the 'Speedball' nib, a tool that significantly increased lettering speed.

Over the 20th century, the company diversified through acquisitions into various art categories, including screen printing and block printing. In 1997, the Speedball division was purchased from Hunt Manufacturing by Walt Glazer, resulting in the formation of Speedball Art Products Co., LLC as an independent, privately-owned company.

Today, Speedball maintains its commitment to American manufacturing, with its global headquarters and primary production facilities located in Statesville, North Carolina. While the company sources some components globally, its core tools, nibs, and many inks continue to be hand-tooled and manufactured in their U.S.-based facility.
