Altra is a specialized American athletic footwear brand celebrated for its innovative 'FootShape' toe box and 'Balanced Cushioning' (formerly known as Zero Drop) technologies. These design philosophies are intended to promote a more natural running gait by allowing the toes to splay and maintaining a level platform between the heel and forefoot. The brand's journey began in Orem, Utah, where founders Golden Harper and Brian Beckstead originally experimented by modifying traditional running shoes in a toaster oven to remove excess heel elevation.

Officially launched in 2011, Altra quickly gained a cult following among trail and road runners. While the brand’s design and innovation roots remain in the United States—with headquarters currently in Denver, Colorado—its manufacturing is distributed across a global network. Production primarily takes place in major footwear hubs such as China and Vietnam to meet international demand, though certain models have historically been produced in the USA to support specialized lines.
