Royal Canin Hair & Skin Care is a specialized dry cat food designed to support dermatological health and coat shine. The brand was founded in 1968 by French veterinarian Jean Cathary in Aimargues, France. Dr. Cathary developed the initial recipes to treat skin and coat conditions in dogs, a focus that remains a core part of the brand's identity today.

Historically, the company became the first to manufacture dry pet food in France and pioneered the use of extruders in European pet food production. Over the decades, ownership shifted from the founder to the Guyomarc'h Group in 1972, then to Paribas Affaires Industrielles in 1990. In 2001, global food and pet care giant Mars, Incorporated acquired Royal Canin, integrating it into its Mars Petcare division.

Today, Royal Canin is a global leader in health nutrition, with manufacturing facilities spread across the world to serve regional markets. Primary production hubs include France (its original home), the United States (with major facilities in Ohio, Missouri, and South Dakota), Canada, Brazil, and several other countries.
