The brand was introduced in 2005 by Champion Petfoods, a company founded in 1985 by Reinhard Muhlenfeld in Alberta, Canada. Orijen has gained international acclaim for its grain-free, high-protein recipes that aim to mirror the natural diets of dogs and cats.

Historically, Orijen was produced exclusively in Alberta, Canada. However, to meet growing demand and expand its global footprint, the brand began manufacturing in the United States in 2016 following the opening of the DogStar Kitchens in Kentucky. In 2023, the brand underwent a significant ownership change when Mars, Incorporated, a global leader in pet care and confectionery, acquired Champion Petfoods. Despite this acquisition, the brand continues to operate with a focus on its original quality standards, utilizing its dedicated manufacturing facilities in both North American countries to supply over 90 markets worldwide.
