Citymapper is a prominent public transit and journey-planning application that originated in London in 2011. Founded by Azmat Yusuf, a former Google employee, the service was initially designed to help commuters navigate the complexities of London's transport network. It quickly expanded to New York and subsequently to over 100 major cities worldwide, gaining a reputation for its user-friendly interface and highly accurate multimodal routing data.
In March 2023, the brand underwent a significant ownership shift when it was acquired by Via Transportation (commonly known as Via), a New York-based mobility technology company. This acquisition was aimed at integrating Citymapper’s consumer-facing journey planning technology with Via's 'TransitTech' infrastructure, which serves cities and transit agencies. As of 2026, Citymapper remains a leading tool for urban commuters, operating under Via’s global umbrella while maintaining its headquarters in London.
