Filson Outdoor Apparel and Gear

Founded in 1897 by Clinton C. Filson in Seattle, Washington, Filson is a legendary American heritage brand originally established as C.C. Filson's Pioneer Alaska Clothing and Blanket Manufacturers to supply prospectors during the Klondike Gold Rush. The brand became famous for its heavy-duty 'Mackinaw Wool' and 'Tin Cloth' (waxed cotton), materials designed to withstand the brutal conditions of the Pacific Northwest and the Yukon.

While Filson built its reputation on local Seattle-based manufacturing, its production model has evolved. Today, it operates under a 'Multiple countries' manufacturing strategy. While heritage items like certain bags and wool coats are still crafted in their Seattle factory or through U.S. partners, an increasing portion of the apparel line is produced globally in countries such as Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and India to accommodate a broader fashion and lifestyle audience. Despite these shifts, the brand maintains a headquarters and flagship factory in Seattle.

Since 2012, Filson has been owned by Bedrock Manufacturing Co., a Dallas-based investment firm founded by Tom Kartsotis (the founder of Fossil and Shinola). In recent years, the brand has seen strategic investment and management influence from the Italian retail group WP Lavori in Corso, which acquired a minority stake in 2021 to help spearhead international and women's market expansion.
