Vipps mobile payment app

Vipps is Norway's leading mobile payment application, originally launched in 2015 by DNB Bank. It revolutionized the local financial landscape by allowing users to send money as easily as sending a text message using just a phone number. Over the years, it expanded from simple peer-to-peer transfers to include bill payments, online shopping, and in-store mobile payments.

In 2022, a significant consolidation occurred when Vipps merged with the Danish and Finnish mobile payment service MobilePay. This merger resulted in the formation of the parent company, Vipps MobilePay AS. While the services continue to operate under their respective brands (Vipps in Norway and Sweden, MobilePay in Denmark and Finland), they are transitioning to a unified technology platform to enhance innovation and cross-border capabilities across the Nordic region.

The company is owned by a consortium of banks, with the largest Norwegian banks holding a 72.2% stake and Danske Bank holding the remaining 27.8%. It remains headquartered in Oslo, Norway, and operates under the supervision of the Norwegian Financial Supervisory Authority.
