Founded in 1946 in Alba, Italy, Ferrero has evolved from a local pastry shop into one of the world's largest confectionery and sweet-packaged food companies. The brand was originally created by Pietro Ferrero, who invented the hazelnut-cocoa cream that preceded Nutella to overcome post-war cocoa shortages. Today, the brand is globally recognized for its iconic products including Nutella, Ferrero Rocher, Kinder, and Tic Tac.
Ferrero remains a private, family-owned enterprise, a rarity among giants of its scale. It is currently owned and controlled by the Ferrero family through the Luxembourg-based holding company, Ferrero International S.A. Giovanni Ferrero, the founder's grandson, serves as the Executive Chairman and holds a majority stake. In recent years, the group has aggressively expanded its portfolio through major acquisitions, such as Nestlé's U.S. candy business, Kellogg's cookies and fruit snacks, and the 2025 acquisition of WK Kellogg Co., diversifying its reach into the cereal and healthy snacking sectors.
Manufacturing takes place across a vast global network of over 37 production plants located on five continents. While its heart remains in Italy, major facilities are situated in Germany, Poland, Canada, and the United States, including a significant new chocolate factory in Bloomington, Illinois, which serves the North American market.
