Amazon Echo

Amazon Echo is a brand of smart speakers developed by the American technology giant Amazon. The project was conceptualized in 2011 within Amazon's hardware research and development division, Lab126, which is primarily based in Sunnyvale and Cupertino, California. The Echo was officially launched in late 2014, introducing the world to the Alexa voice assistant. To refine the technologies behind the device, Amazon strategically acquired specialized firms, including the Polish company Ivona for speech synthesis and the British startup Evi for its knowledge-base and query technology.

While the design and software architecture originate in the United States, the physical hardware is primarily manufactured through contract manufacturers in China, most notably Foxconn and Quanta Computer. Manufacturing hubs in the Guangdong province, such as Shenzhen and Hengyang, have historically been central to the production of these devices. Amazon remains the ultimate owner and developer of the entire Echo ecosystem, integrating it with its broader services like Amazon Music and the Alexa Skills Kit.
