Volksbank (de Volksbank)

Volksbank, commonly known by its corporate name de Volksbank, is a major Dutch retail bank specializing in mortgage loans, savings, and payments. Its history is deeply rooted in social responsibility, dating back to 1817 with the establishment of the first savings bank in the Netherlands aimed at encouraging individual saving and home ownership.

Following a period of financial instability involving its former parent company SNS Reaal, the bank was nationalized by the Dutch government in 2013 to ensure stability in the national financial system. Since then, it has been 100% state-owned through the NL Financial Investments (NLFI) agency. In recent years, the institution has undergone significant structural changes, including a major rebranding effort initiated in late 2024 to consolidate its various service labels—such as SNS and RegioBank—under the ASN Bank brand identity to streamline operations and enhance its focus on sustainable banking.
