The brand's history dates back to the mid-20th century, specifically the 1950s, when it was developed by Westminster Laboratories in the United Kingdom. Its active ingredient, sennosides, is derived from the senna plant, a natural vegetable source.

Over the decades, the brand has changed hands several times through pharmaceutical industry acquisitions. It was long associated with Purdue Pharma (through its subsidiary Avrio Health). However, as of June 1, 2023, the brand was acquired by Atlantis Consumer Healthcare, a subsidiary of Arcadia Consumer Healthcare. While the brand has British origins, it is now owned by an American-based entity. Due to its global distribution, manufacturing occurs in multiple locations including North America and Europe to serve various regional markets.
