Tegernseer Spezial beer

Tegernseer Spezial is a premium Export Helles beer produced by the Herzoglich Bayerisches Brauhaus Tegernsee, one of Germany's most prestigious and traditional breweries. Located on the shores of Lake Tegernsee in Upper Bavaria, the brewery is housed in the north wing of a former Benedictine monastery. While the brewery traces its spiritual roots back to the year 1050, its documented commercial history began in 1675 when brewing rights were relocated to the site.

The brand has a unique status in the German beer market, remaining strictly family-owned rather than joining a large beverage conglomerate. Since 1817, it has been in the hands of the House of Wittelsbach, the former Bavarian royal family. Today, the brewery is managed by Maria Anna Herzogin in Bayern, maintaining a commitment to traditional brewing methods that follow the Bavarian Purity Law. The 'Spezial' variety is particularly noted for its slightly higher alcohol content (5.6% ABV) and balanced, malty character compared to the standard Helles.

All production takes place in the Bavaria region, specifically at the historic site in Tegernsee and a modern bottling facility in nearby Gmund. The brewery continues to expand its footprint independently, recently acquiring the Hopf wheat beer brewery in 2026 to further diversify its portfolio while remaining a local, independent powerhouse.
