Speedtest by Ookla

Speedtest by Ookla is the world's most recognized internet speed testing service. It was originally developed by Ookla, a company founded in Seattle, Washington, in 2006 by Doug Suttles and Mike Apgar. The brand was famously named after Suttles' pet cat, Ookla. For nearly a decade, the service operated as the flagship product of Ookla before being acquired by the media giant Ziff Davis in 2014.

In early 2026, a transformative shift in ownership occurred when the global professional services and consulting firm Accenture reached a definitive agreement to acquire Ookla (including Speedtest and Downdetector) from Ziff Davis for $1.2 billion. This acquisition was driven by Accenture’s strategy to integrate high-fidelity network intelligence and diagnostic data into its enterprise AI and digital infrastructure services. While the software and infrastructure are primarily developed and maintained in the United States, the service utilizes a massive global network of over 16,000 servers to facilitate localized testing.
