Thomy is an iconic Swiss brand that has become a staple in European households, particularly famous for its mustard and mayonnaise. Originally founded in 1907 as 'Helvetia', it became the first company to produce mustard on an industrial scale in Switzerland. The brand was later renamed Thomy in 1930—changing the founder's name 'Thomi' to 'Thomy' for international appeal—and pioneered the use of aluminum tubes for food products.
Since 1971, Thomy has been under the ownership of Nestlé. Today, the brand's production is primarily concentrated in Europe, with major manufacturing facilities in Basel (Switzerland) and Karlsruhe and Neuss (Germany). The product shown is the 'Scharfer Senf Extra' (Extra Hot Mustard), which is known for its intense spiciness derived from high-quality brown mustard seeds and a double-grinding process that ensures a smooth, creamy texture. The red-lidded jar is a modern design update that still maintains the brand's sustainable tradition, as the glass jars are frequently reused by consumers as drinking glasses.
