Breakstone's is a prestigious American dairy brand founded in 1882 by Joseph and Isaac Breakstone on New York City's Lower East Side. Originally known for high-quality staples like cottage cheese and sour cream, the brand became a household name throughout the 20th century. Production was historically moved to Walton, New York, in the early 1900s, where the main manufacturing facility remains active today.
Over the decades, ownership of the brand transitioned through several major food conglomerates. It was part of the Kraft Foods portfolio (managed by Kraft Heinz) for many years. However, in 2021, Kraft Heinz sold its natural cheese business—including the Breakstone's brand—to the French-based global dairy leader Groupe Lactalis. Within the United States, the brand is now managed by Lactalis Heritage Dairy, maintaining its long-standing tradition of domestic production in New York.
