Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee

Jamaican Blue Mountain is a world-renowned specialty coffee grown exclusively in the Blue Mountain region of eastern Jamaica. Its history began in 1728 when Governor Sir Nicholas Lawes introduced the first coffee plant to the island from Martinique. The specific geographical conditions of the Blue Mountains—high altitude, cool misty climate, and rich volcanic soil—create a unique 'Typica' Arabica variety known for its incredibly smooth flavor and lack of bitterness.

Unlike most commercial goods, 'Blue Mountain' is a globally protected certification mark and a Geographical Indication (GI). It is strictly regulated by the Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority (JACRA), formerly the Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica. To be labeled as such, the coffee must be grown at elevations between 2,000 and 5,500 feet within specific parishes. Due to its limited production and high prestige, it is one of the most expensive and sought-after coffees globally, with a significant majority of its exports historically going to the Japanese market.

While multiple private estates (such as Clifton Mount, Wallenford, or Mavis Bank) and brands (like Blue Mountain Best or Blue Mountain Estates) produce and process the coffee, the ultimate 'owner' of the certification and regulatory standards is the Jamaican government through JACRA. This ensures that the heritage and quality of the brand remain tied to the Jamaican soil.
