Scotch Magic Tape is a signature product of the 3M Company, originally known as the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company. The Scotch brand was born in 1925 when 3M engineer Richard Drew invented the first masking tape. The specific "Magic Tape" variety, known for its matte finish and ability to disappear on paper, was later introduced in 1961.
Today, the brand is owned and manufactured by 3M, an American multinational conglomerate. While 3M has a vast global manufacturing footprint with facilities in dozens of countries, a significant portion of Scotch tape production remains centered in the United States, particularly at specialized plants in Cynthiana, Kentucky, and Hutchinson, Minnesota. The brand's iconic plaid packaging—inspired by the Wallace clan tartan—has made it one of the most recognizable household and office products worldwide.
