Giro was founded in 1985 by Jim Gentes in Scotts Valley, California, initially focused on lightweight, highly-ventilated performance helmets for cyclists and triathletes. The 'Fixture MIPS' is one of the brand's popular entry-to-mid-tier mountain bike helmets, featuring the Multi-directional Impact Protection System (MIPS) designed to reduce rotational forces during impacts.

Historically, Giro's R&D was centered in its famous 'Dome' laboratory in California. However, after several corporate transitions, the brand became part of the outdoor products company Vista Outdoor. In late 2023, Vista Outdoor spun off its outdoor brands (including Giro, Bell, and Fox Racing) into a new entity called Revelyst. In early 2025, Revelyst was acquired by the private equity firm Strategic Value Partners (SVP), taking the company private. While design and engineering remain led by teams in the United States, large-scale manufacturing for Giro's consumer helmets, including the Fixture line, is conducted through specialized manufacturing partners primarily located in China and other parts of Asia.
