A defining moment in the brand's early history was the 'sledgehammer incident' in 1985, where Zhang ordered the destruction of defective refrigerators to underscore a commitment to quality.

Today, the brand is owned by Haier Smart Home Co., Ltd. (formerly Qingdao Haier), which is part of the broader Haier Group. The company has expanded aggressively through international acquisitions, incorporating famous brands such as GE Appliances (USA), Candy (Italy), and Fisher & Paykel (New Zealand) into its portfolio.
