Universal Music Group

Universal Music Group (UMG) is an international music conglomerate recognized as the world's leading music company. Its origins trace back to the formation of the American branch of Decca Records in 1934. Over decades, through various mergers and acquisitions involving the Music Corporation of America (MCA), Matsushita Electric, and the Seagram Company, the entity was officially renamed Universal Music Group in 1996.

Today, UMG operates as a Dutch-American corporation. While its legal corporate headquarters are situated in Hilversum, Netherlands, its central operational management is based in Santa Monica, California. The company transitioned from being a wholly-owned subsidiary of the French conglomerate Vivendi to a publicly traded entity on the Euronext Amsterdam exchange in 2021. As of 2026, it remains a dominant force in the industry, owning iconic labels such as Capitol, Interscope, Def Jam, and Island Records, and maintaining the largest music catalog globally.
