Freia Melkerull chocolate

Freia Melkerull is one of Norway's most iconic chocolate products, often marketed under the slogan 'Et lite stykke Norge' (A little piece of Norway). It is a classic milk chocolate roll made by Freia and is widely regarded as a symbol of Norwegian food culture.

Historically, the Freia brand was founded in 1889 by Olaf Larsen and Fredrik Wilhelm Hjorth Christensen in the Rodeløkka district of Oslo. In 1892, it was acquired by Johan Throne Holst, who transformed it into Norway's leading confectionery manufacturer. Today, the product is still primarily manufactured at the historic Freia factory in Oslo, utilizing milk from Norwegian cows.

While Freia remains deeply rooted in Norwegian identity, the company's ownership has changed over the decades. In 1993, the company was acquired by the American conglomerate Kraft General Foods (later Kraft Foods). In 2012, Kraft Foods split into two companies, and the confectionery and snack business was renamed Mondelēz International. Consequently, the ultimate owner of the brand is now the American multinational Mondelēz International, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. Despite foreign ownership, the branding continues to emphasize its Norwegian heritage and local production.
