Glad is a globally recognized brand synonymous with household waste management and food protection. The brand's history began in 1963 when Union Carbide launched Glad Wrap in the United States, competing with established food wraps. Interestingly, the concept of the plastic garbage bag itself is attributed to Canadian inventors Harry Wasylyk and Larry Hansen in 1950, whose technology was later commercialized by Union Carbide under the Glad name.
Over the decades, ownership shifted significantly. In 1985, Union Carbide divested the consumer brand to First Brands Corporation. In 1999, The Clorox Company acquired First Brands, bringing Glad into its portfolio. To leverage research and development, Clorox entered a joint venture with Procter & Gamble (P&G) in 2002, where P&G held a 20% stake and contributed core technologies like ForceFlex. By February 2025, Clorox reached an agreement to acquire P&G's remaining stake, with the brand becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of Clorox by early 2026.
Manufacturing of Glad products is distributed across several key facilities. Significant production occurs in the United States (notably in Rogers, Arkansas and Amherst, Virginia) and Canada (Orangeville, Ontario). The Orangeville plant is particularly notable as the sole global producer of Glad's compostable bags. Additionally, the brand maintains a substantial manufacturing presence in Guangzhou, China, to serve the Asian market.
