Astra is a prominent brand in the wet shaving industry, most famous for its 'Superior Platinum' and 'Superior Stainless' double-edge razor blades. The brand's origins trace back to the Czech Republic (formerly Czechoslovakia), where it was established as a manufacturer of precision grooming steel. For many years, Astra blades were synonymous with high-quality European manufacturing.
In 1996, the Gillette company acquired the Astra brand and subsequently moved production to its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in St. Petersburg, Russia (Petersburg Products International). Following the 2005 merger between Gillette and Procter & Gamble (P&G), Astra became part of the P&G global grooming portfolio.
Due to geopolitical shifts and supply chain adjustments starting around 2023, P&G transitioned the primary manufacturing of Astra blades from Russia to its facilities in India. While some stock from the Russian facility may still circulate in the market, new production is largely centered in India to ensure consistent global availability.
