MG, originally standing for Morris Garages, is an iconic British automotive marque with a history dating back to 1924 in Oxford, United Kingdom. Founded by Cecil Kimber, the brand became legendary for its sporty two-seater cars and roadsters. After decades of shifting British ownership—including periods under the British Motor Corporation (BMC), British Leyland, and the Rover Group—the brand eventually became part of the MG Rover Group, which collapsed in 2005.
Following the liquidation of MG Rover, the rights to the MG brand were acquired by the Chinese automaker Nanjing Automobile Group (NAC). In 2007, NAC merged with SAIC Motor Corporation, a major Chinese state-owned automotive giant. Since then, SAIC has successfully revitalized MG as a global mainstream brand, shifting its focus toward affordable, technology-driven vehicles and electric mobility.
While the brand maintains a significant design and engineering presence in the United Kingdom through its advanced design studio in London, manufacturing is now highly globalized. Most production takes place at SAIC's state-of-the-art facilities in China (Shanghai, Nanjing, Zhengzhou, and Ningde). To serve various regional markets, MG vehicles are also manufactured in Thailand, India, Indonesia, and Taiwan.
