BankID

BankID is Sweden's leading electronic identification system, serving as a secure digital alternative to physical ID cards or passports. Launched in 2003, it allows individuals to authenticate their identity and sign documents digitally across thousands of private and public sector platforms, including banks, government agencies like the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket), and healthcare services.

The service was developed through a unique cooperation among major Swedish banks to establish a common digital infrastructure. Today, it is available in three forms: Mobile BankID, BankID on card, and BankID on file. Managed by Finansiell ID-Teknik BID AB, it has reached near-total adoption in Sweden, with over 8.5 million users and billions of transactions yearly, effectively enabling a digitalized and largely cashless society.
