Benefort Amer du Val d'Aoste is a traditional herbal liqueur produced by Distilleria Alpe in the Aosta Valley, Italy. The name 'Benefort' is the local Patois term for Artemisia absinthium (wormwood), which is one of the key botanical ingredients in this 'Amer' (bitter).
The brand was founded in 1948 by Armando Calvetti, a pharmaceutical chemistry graduate who applied his knowledge of botany to create artisanal mountain spirits. The production process involves a complex infusion and distillation of over 20 different alpine herbs, flowers, and roots, using water sourced from surrounding glacial springs.
Starting from its establishment in 1948, Distilleria Alpe has remained a family-owned business. It is currently managed by the second generation of the Calvetti family, maintaining its headquarters and production facility in Hône, Italy. Note that it is distinct from "Distilleria dell'Alpe" (of the Venetian region), which is a separate entity.
