Enbridge is a major North American energy infrastructure giant that operates a vast network of pipelines and utility services. Founded in 1949 as the Interprovincial Pipe Line Company (IPL), it was initially created by Imperial Oil to transport crude oil from the newly discovered Leduc fields in Alberta to refineries across the prairies. Over the decades, through strategic expansions and high-profile acquisitions—such as the 1996 purchase of Consumers' Gas and the 2017 merger with Spectra Energy—the company transformed from a regional Canadian pipeline operator into a leading multinational energy delivery firm.

Today, Enbridge manages the world's longest and most complex crude oil and liquids transportation system, spanning approximately 18,085 miles across Canada and the United States. In addition to oil, it is a dominant player in natural gas, transporting roughly 20% of the gas consumed in the U.S. and operating the largest natural gas utility by volume in North America following its recent acquisition of major U.S. gas utilities from Dominion Energy. The company is publicly traded and headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, serving as a critical bridge between energy producers and consumers while increasingly investing in renewable energy projects like offshore wind farms in Europe.
