STACKIT is a sovereign European cloud provider and hyperscaler that originated from the internal digital needs of the Schwarz Group, the corporate giant behind Lidl and Kaufland. Developed initially in 2018 to drive the digital transformation of its parent group, STACKIT was launched to the external market in 2022 to provide an independent, GDPR-compliant alternative to non-European cloud services.
The brand is centered on digital sovereignty, ensuring that data is stored and processed exclusively within the European Union to meet stringent German and EU data security standards. Its manufacturing—or more accurately, its infrastructure and data hosting—is primarily located in high-security data centers in Germany (such as Neckarsulm and Ellhofen) and Austria (Ostermiething).
As of 2024, the business operates under STACKIT GmbH & Co. KG, which is part of Schwarz Digits, the dedicated IT and digital division of the Schwarz Group. It remains 100% owned by the Schwarz Group, a family-owned multinational based in Neckarsulm, Germany.
