Proton Drive is a security-focused cloud storage and file synchronization service developed by the Swiss technology company Proton AG. Originally launched as a beta in 2020 and fully released in 2022, the product was created by a team of scientists who met at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). The service is built on the principle of 'privacy by default,' utilizing end-to-end encryption and zero-access architecture to ensure that only the user can access their stored data.
Unlike many global tech firms that rely on third-party cloud infrastructure like Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure, Proton AG owns and operates its own server hardware. These data centers are primarily located in Switzerland—often in highly secure facilities like underground nuclear bunkers—and Germany, providing redundancy and protection under some of the world's strictest privacy laws.
In 2024, Proton transitioned to a non-profit-led governance structure to safeguard its independence and mission. The brand is now majority-owned by the Proton Foundation, a Swiss non-profit entity. This unique ownership model is designed to prevent hostile takeovers and ensure that the company prioritizes user privacy and the public interest over traditional venture capital profit motives.
