Cove Soda began as a grassroots project in 2016 when brothers John and Ryan MacLellan started brewing kombucha in their mother's kitchen in Malignant Cove, Nova Scotia. After finding success at local farmer's markets, the brand grew rapidly and officially pivoted its focus toward the functional soda market in 2022. The brand is known for being Canada's first zero-sugar soda enhanced with probiotics and prebiotics, targeting the growing 'gut-healthy' beverage category.
While the company remains headquartered in Halifax, Canada, its manufacturing has expanded to match its international growth. It utilizes a canning facility in London, Ontario, for a significant portion of its production and has recently established manufacturing capabilities in the United States, including locations in California and potentially Wisconsin, to serve its massive expansion into retailers like Costco, Target, and Whole Foods across North America.
As of 2026, the brand remains an independent, venture-backed company. It recently completed a significant Series A funding round led by Vanterra Ventures, with strategic investments from high-profile figures in the music and sports industries. While it has formed a distribution partnership with Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) for the Canadian market, it has not been fully acquired and continues to operate under the leadership of its original founders.
