Ayam Brand is one of the most iconic and oldest consumer food brands in Southeast Asia, with a history spanning over 130 years. It was founded in 1892 in Singapore (then part of British Malaya) by Alfred Clouet, a French entrepreneur. Initially, Clouet imported luxury goods like French perfume and wine, but he successfully pivoted to canned sardines—a cutting-edge food technology at the time. The brand's name, 'Ayam' (meaning chicken in Malay), was adopted because local consumers and traders found it easier to refer to the rooster on the logo rather than pronouncing the founder's French name.
In 1954, the company was acquired by the Denis Frères Group (now known as Denis Group), a family-owned enterprise of French origin. Under this management, the brand expanded its reach globally and diversified its product range to include tuna, mackerel, baked beans, and coconut products. Despite its strong historical association with Malaysia and Singapore, the brand remains under the ultimate ownership of the French-established Denis Group through its subsidiary Ayam S.A.R.L. Production is heavily concentrated in Southeast Asia to maintain Halal certification and high quality, with major facilities located in Malaysia (Taiping and Batu Pahat), Vietnam, and Indonesia.
