BP motor oil, including the well-known BP Visco range, is a product of BP p.l.c., one of the world's largest integrated energy companies. The brand's history is deeply rooted in the early 20th century, originating from the Anglo-Persian Oil Company founded in 1909. While the brand was originally tied to British interests in Persia (modern-day Iran), it evolved into 'British Petroleum' in 1954 and later simply 'BP' after several significant mergers.

Today, BP's automotive lubricants are often manufactured through its specialized subsidiary, Castrol, which BP acquired in 2000. Manufacturing occurs globally to support regional markets; for example, North American products are primarily blended and packaged in facilities in Pennsylvania and Louisiana, while other regions are served by local or regional blending plants in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

BP has transitioned from a state-owned enterprise (the UK government held a majority stake from 1914 until the late 1980s) to a fully privatized public limited company. It is now owned by a broad base of institutional and individual shareholders through listings on the London and New York stock exchanges.
