Nintendo, one of the world's most influential gaming companies, was founded in 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi in Kyoto, Japan. Originally a manufacturer of handmade 'Hanafuda' playing cards, the company transitioned into toys and eventually revolutionized the electronics industry in the late 1970s and early 1980s with the launch of the Color TV-Game and the Famicom (NES).

While Nintendo’s research, design, and development remain strictly centralized at its headquarters in Kyoto, its manufacturing strategy is global. Historically, most production occurred in China through partners like Foxconn. However, in recent years, Nintendo has significantly diversified its supply chain to countries like Vietnam and Cambodia to mitigate geopolitical risks and tariffs. Most modern hardware, including the Nintendo Switch and its successors, is produced in these Southeast Asian hubs.

Today, Nintendo Co., Ltd. remains an independent, publicly traded company. It is not owned by a larger conglomerate but is supported by various institutional investors, including Japanese trust banks and global asset managers. It operates several regional subsidiaries, such as Nintendo of America and Nintendo of Europe, to manage distribution and localized brand operations worldwide.
