Knowledge Cotton Apparel is a Danish fashion brand that has become a benchmark for sustainable and ethical clothing. The brand's history is deeply rooted in the textile heritage of the Mørup family, beginning in 1969 when Jørgen Mørup established a small textile company, Mørups Stofvæveri, in Herning, Denmark. Driven by a vision of responsible manufacturing that respects both people and nature, Jørgen was an early advocate for organic cotton in the late 1980s. In 2008, he co-founded the Knowledge Cotton Apparel brand with his son, Mads Mørup, to challenge the conventional textile industry by focusing exclusively on eco-friendly materials and transparent supply chains.
The brand's manufacturing strategy involves long-term partnerships with specialized factories worldwide that share its sustainability values. A significant portion of its production, particularly shirts, knitwear, and trousers, is carried out in Denizli, Turkey, using GOTS-certified organic cotton grown locally. Specialized outerwear made from recycled PET plastic bottles is produced in advanced facilities in China. Other jersey items and t-shirts are manufactured by Fair Trade suppliers in India. To ensure high standards of quality and ethical labor, the brand also works with partners in Portugal, Lithuania, and Bulgaria.
Knowledge Cotton Apparel remains a family-owned enterprise, with the Mørup family maintaining ultimate ownership and management from their headquarters in Herning, Denmark. The company is recognized for its commitment to circular fashion, utilizing materials like organic linen, recycled wool, and regenerative organic cotton, while maintaining a carbon-positive footprint across its operations.
