Vagabond Shoemakers is a prominent Swedish footwear brand that traces its creative roots back to 1973. While initially focused on men's shoes, the brand underwent a significant transformation in the early 1990s when founders Mats Nilsson and Marie Nilsson Peterzén took over and shifted operations to incorporate a design-led, global perspective. Today, the brand is synonymous with contemporary Scandinavian design, characterized by minimalist aesthetics and a commitment to high-quality craftsmanship.

Historically, Vagabond's design and production were centered in Italy and Portugal. However, in 1993, the company moved its creative operations back to Varberg, Sweden, where their specialized workshop and headquarters remain today. While design and prototyping happen in Sweden, the majority of large-scale manufacturing takes place in Vietnam, particularly at their own factory in Ho Chi Minh City, as well as through partnerships with external suppliers in Asia and Europe.

In a landmark move reflecting the founders' commitment to long-term impact, ownership of Vagabond Shoemakers was transitioned at the end of 2023. The brand and its parent company were donated as a gift to the newly established Vagabond Shoemakers Foundation. This unique ownership structure ensures that the company's future profits are dedicated to research, education, and charitable projects, effectively making the foundation the ultimate owner and guardian of the brand's legacy.
