La Roche-Posay is a world-renowned dermocosmetic brand with history dating back to the 14th century, centered around the mineral-rich thermal spring water in the French village of the same name. Legend has it that the healing properties of the water were discovered when a knight's horse was cured of a skin condition after bathing in the spring. By the early 1900s, the Town of La Roche-Posay had established Europe's leading center of thermal dermatology.

The modern commercial laboratory was founded in 1975 by pharmacist René Levayer to create scientific, minimalist skincare solutions for sensitive skin. The brand was acquired by the global beauty giant L'Oréal in 1989 and has since become the cornerstone of its Dermatological Beauty Division. Today, the products are favored by dermatologists worldwide for their efficacy in treating conditions like eczema, acne, and skin sensitivity. While most core formulations continue to be manufactured in France to stay close to the original thermal source, the global scale of the brand under L'Oréal means that regional production and distribution centers exist across various continents.
