The brand's signature square shape was famously suggested by Clara Ritter in 1932 to create a chocolate bar that could fit into a sports jacket pocket without breaking while maintaining the same weight as a standard rectangular bar.

The company, Alfred Ritter GmbH & Co. KG, remains a family-owned enterprise based in Waldenbuch, Germany. While the majority of production takes place at their historic main plant in Waldenbuch, the company expanded its manufacturing capabilities in 2019 by acquiring a production facility in Breitenbrunn, Austria.

Ritter Sport is recognized for its commitment to sustainability, being a pioneer in carbon-neutral production. The company sources 100% certified sustainable cocoa and even operates its own cocoa plantation, 'El Cacao', in Nicaragua to ensure high standards of environmental and social responsibility within its supply chain.
