Thales Group is a premier French multinational corporation that traces its lineage back to the establishment of Compagnie Française Thomson-Houston (CFTH) in 1893. The company underwent several major transformations throughout the 20th century, most notably the 1968 merger that created Thomson-CSF. In December 2000, Thomson-CSF was rebranded as Thales Group to better reflect its global technological ambitions and dual-use (civil and military) expertise. Named after the ancient Greek philosopher Thales of Miletus, the brand has become synonymous with advanced electronics, aerospace systems, and cybersecurity.

Today, Thales is a global leader in the defense and security, aerospace, and digital identity sectors. Headquartered in Paris (La Défense), its manufacturing and research operations are distributed across more than 68 countries, with significant industrial footprints in France, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Singapore. The company is publicly traded on Euronext Paris (HO), but it remains a strategic asset for the French government, which maintains a significant ownership stake. Another major shareholder is Dassault Aviation, reinforcing Thales's role within the European defense industrial base. The group continues to expand through high-tech acquisitions, such as the digital security firm Gemalto and the cybersecurity company Imperva, positioning itself as a central player in the 21st-century digital economy.
