Carr’s biscuits

Carr’s is a historic British brand renowned for its premium crackers and biscuits, most notably the iconic Table Water biscuit. The brand’s story began in 1831 when Jonathan Dodgson Carr opened a small bakery and biscuit factory in Carlisle, England. By 1837, the site had become the world's first large-scale biscuit factory, and in 1841, it was granted a Royal Warrant by Queen Victoria. The company pioneered vertical integration by running both a flour mill and a bakery, ensuring total control over the quality of its products.

Over the decades, the business evolved and split; while the flour-milling arm eventually became Carr's Group PLC (focused on agriculture and engineering), the biscuit-making division—Carr's of Carlisle—passed through several hands. In 1972, the biscuit brand was acquired by United Biscuits. In 2014, United Biscuits was purchased by the Turkish multinational Yıldız Holding.

Today, Carr’s is a key brand within pladis, a global snacking company established in 2016 by Yıldız Holding to house its international snack portfolio. While the brand is marketed by Kellanova (formerly Kellogg Company) in the United States, its primary manufacturing remains centered in its historic home of Carlisle, United Kingdom, where the factory is often still affectionately referred to as Carr’s by the local community.
