Western Mountaineering is a specialized manufacturer known for producing high-end, ultralight down sleeping bags and gear. Founded in 1970 by Gary Schaezlein and Jeff Jones, the company has maintained its commitment to quality by keeping nearly all of its production in-house.

The Summerlite sleeping bag, like approximately 95% of the brand's product line, is manufactured at their own factory in San Jose, California. While the final product is American-made, the company sources premium raw materials globally to ensure peak performance; this includes 850+ fill power goose down from Poland and technical shell fabrics typically sourced from Japan or South Korea.

Western Mountaineering remains an independent company owned by its founders and managed by Gary Peterson. Unlike many of its competitors in the outdoor industry that have moved production offshore or been acquired by large conglomerates, Western Mountaineering has resisted scaling beyond its specialized niche, focusing instead on craftsmanship and longevity.
