Originally founded in 1996 in San Jose, California, it established itself as a pioneer in the industry, notably with products like the JumpDrive USB flash drive. The brand's history is marked by significant ownership transitions: it was acquired by American semiconductor giant Micron Technology in 2006, which operated it until 2017.

In August 2017, Micron sold the Lexar brand and its trademark rights to Shenzhen Longsys Electronics Co., Ltd., a leading flash memory manufacturer based in China. Since then, Lexar has operated as a subsidiary of Longsys. While the brand maintains a corporate and marketing presence in the United States, its manufacturing operations are primarily centralized within China and other Asian electronics hubs like Taiwan and South Korea, leveraging Longsys's extensive supply chain and production capabilities.
