Sagres Cerveja

Sagres is one of Portugal's most iconic beer brands, originally launched in 1940 by the Sociedade Central de Cervejas (SCC) to represent the company at the Portuguese World Exhibition. The brand takes its name from the village of Sagres, located at the southwestern tip of Portugal, a site historically associated with the Age of Discovery and Portuguese maritime exploration.

While the brand maintains deep roots in Portuguese culture and national identity—frequently sponsoring the Portuguese national football team—its ownership has transitioned into the portfolio of a global brewing giant. In 2008, the Dutch company Heineken acquired SCC as part of the breakup of the Scottish & Newcastle group. Since then, Heineken has served as the ultimate owner, managing the brand through its local subsidiary.

Production remains centered in Portugal, primarily at the Vialonga brewery north of Lisbon. The flagship Sagres Cerveja is a 100% natural pilsner-style pale lager, known for its light body and slightly bitter finish, adhering to traditional brewing methods that have defined the brand for over eight decades.
