Bookeen Cybook e-reader

Bookeen is a pioneering French consumer electronics company specifically focused on the digital reading market. Founded in 2003 by Laurent Picard and Michaël Dahan—two former engineers from the early e-book venture Cytale—the brand was established to revive and advance the hardware first introduced as the Cybook Gen1 in 1998.

Over the years, Bookeen became a significant European player in the e-reader industry, launching innovative devices like the Cybook Gen3, the first to use E Ink technology in a truly portable format, and the Cybook Muse and Ocean series. While the brand is deeply rooted in French engineering and design, its manufacturing has traditionally been outsourced to specialized facilities in China, following the industry standard for consumer electronics.

In late 2022, following financial difficulties, Bookeen was acquired by Vivlio, another prominent French e-book company. This acquisition, finalized at the Commercial Court of Paris, ensured the continuity of the Bookeen ecosystem and brand under Vivlio's ownership. Today, Bookeen functions as a key asset within Vivlio's portfolio, maintaining its legacy as one of the original inventors of the modern e-reader experience.
