Founded in 1982 by Parkash Singh Chima in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, Bonmarché began as a door-to-door clothing business before opening its first retail store in Doncaster in 1985. The brand grew significantly to become one of the UK’s largest value retailers specializing in fashion for the 50+ age demographic and plus-size clothing. Over the decades, the brand has undergone several ownership changes, including a period under the Peacock Group and private equity firm Sun European Partners.

Following financial difficulties and administration in late 2020, Bonmarché was acquired in early 2021 by Purepay Retail Limited. This acquisition was led by a consortium of international investors and Steve Simpson, the former Chief Operating Officer of the Edinburgh Woollen Mill Group. Under this new management, the brand has refocused on its core loyalty customer base and has successfully returned to profitability as of 2024.

While the brand is headquartered in the United Kingdom, its products are manufactured through a global supply chain typical of high-street fashion retailers, with primary production occurring in major textile-producing nations such as China, Bangladesh, and India.
