Santander is one of the world's leading financial institutions, with a legacy dating back to May 15, 1857, when it was founded by a group of local businessmen in Santander, Spain. Originally established to facilitate trade between Spain and the Americas, it has since grown into a global powerhouse. The bank's iconic identity, including its red logo and flame symbol introduced in 1986, is recognized across more than 25 countries.

Today, Santander operates as a massive multinational with a primary focus on retail and commercial banking. While it is a Spanish-born brand, its 'production'—the delivery of its banking services—occurs globally across ten core markets, including Spain, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Mexico, and the United States. In recent years, Santander has undergone a significant digital transformation, becoming the first bank in the western world to operate its core banking platform entirely in the cloud through its proprietary 'Gravity' system.

The group is currently led by Ana Patricia Botín, who represents the fourth generation of the Botín family to chair the institution.
