Beefsteak Begonia (Begonia × erythrophylla)

The Beefsteak Begonia, scientifically known as Begonia × erythrophylla, is a classic heirloom houseplant celebrated for its striking, waxy foliage. It features thick, kidney-shaped leaves that are a deep, glossy green on the upper side and a vibrant burgundy-red underneath, leading to its popular common name. This plant is a rhizomatous hybrid, meaning it grows from a creeping horizontal stem along the soil surface. It is prized for its resilience and ability to thrive in indirect light, producing delicate clusters of rose-pink flowers on tall stems during late winter and early spring.

Developed in Germany in 1845, it is one of the oldest recorded begonia hybrids, created by crossing Begonia manicata and Begonia hydrocotylifolia.
