McVitie's Digestives are a cornerstone of British snack culture, first developed in 1892 by Alexander Grant. The brand's history dates back even further to 1830, when Robert McVitie opened his first bakery shop in Edinburgh, Scotland. Over nearly two centuries, the company evolved from a local Scottish bakery into a global powerhouse, famously receiving a Royal Warrant and crafting wedding cakes for the British Royal Family.

While the brand originated in Scotland, modern mass production is concentrated in England. The Harlesden factory in London is the primary manufacturing hub for these chocolate digestive biscuits, while the dedicated chocolate refinery in Stockport, Greater Manchester, produces the specific chocolate coating used across the range. In 2022, the brand officially severed its physical manufacturing ties with Scotland by closing its last factory there.

In terms of ownership, McVitie's was a flagship brand of the British company United Biscuits for many decades. In 2014, United Biscuits was acquired by the Turkish multinational Yıldız Holding. By 2016, Yıldız Holding consolidated its international snack businesses—including United Biscuits, Godiva, and Ülker—under a new global entity called pladis, which is headquartered in London and remains the ultimate owner as of 2026.
