Altra Running, commonly known as Altra, is an American footwear brand that revolutionized the industry with its focus on natural running mechanics. Founded in 2009 by Golden Harper and Brian Beckstead in Logan, Utah, the brand's origins are famously tied to a toaster oven used to modify traditional shoes to create a 'Zero Drop' platform. This design, which ensures the heel and forefoot are at the same height from the ground, combined with a signature 'FootShape' toe box, became the brand's hallmark.
While the intellectual property and design headquarters remain in the United States (specifically Denver, Colorado), the manufacturing of Altra shoes is conducted through contract partners in Asia. The majority of production occurs in specialized footwear factories in China and Vietnam to maintain technical performance standards while remaining commercially viable.
Starting as an independent startup, the brand was first acquired by ICON Health & Fitness in 2011 before being purchased by VF Corporation in 2018. As of 2026, Altra remains a key part of the VF Corporation portfolio, sitting alongside other global outdoor and apparel giants like The North Face and Vans. Under this ownership, the brand has expanded significantly from its niche trail-running roots to become a global leader in both road and technical outdoor footwear.
