Opsumit is a prescription medication containing the active ingredient macitentan, used primarily for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). The drug was originally developed by the Swiss pharmaceutical and biotechnology company Actelion Pharmaceuticals Ltd., which was founded in 1997 in Allschwil, Switzerland.
Following its official approval by the FDA in 2013 and subsequently by European regulators, Opsumit became a cornerstone of Actelion's portfolio. In 2017, the brand and its parent company were acquired by Johnson & Johnson in a significant $30 billion deal. Today, Opsumit is managed under the Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine division (formerly Janssen Pharmaceuticals). While the brand's scientific origin and primary manufacturing are rooted in Switzerland, the global supply chain for such specialized pharmaceuticals often involves various international facilities within the Johnson & Johnson network.
