Founded in Munich in 2011, FlixBus emerged following the deregulation of the German bus market, launching its first routes in 2013. The brand was established by André Schwämmlein, Jochen Engert, and Daniel Krauss with a vision to modernize long-distance travel through a tech-driven, asset-light model. Unlike traditional carriers, FlixBus does not typically own its fleet or employ its drivers; instead, it operates as a platform that manages network planning, marketing, pricing, and ticketing, while partnering with local medium-sized bus companies that provide the vehicles and operational labor.

Over the last decade, the brand has seen explosive global growth, fueled by aggressive acquisitions of competitors such as MeinFernbus, Postbus, and the iconic American brand Greyhound Lines. Today, it operates under the parent company Flix SE, which also manages FlixTrain and international subsidiaries like Kâmil Koç in Turkey. The brand's signature green buses are now a staple of affordable intercity travel across Europe, North America, South America, and parts of Asia.

Manufacturing of the physical vehicles used by FlixBus partners occurs across various locations worldwide, often involving major bus manufacturers like Setra (Germany), MAN (Germany), Irizar (Spain), and Volvo (Sweden). Ownership remains with Flix SE, which is backed by a diverse group of prominent institutional investors, including EQT, Kühne Holding, Permira, and General Atlantic.
